SCAR stands for Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle. This powerful assault rifle, the FN SCAR, has been used by the world’s most demanding combat and security units. It is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO caliber and is fitted with a standard 16” barrel.

What is a SCAR?

SCAR is a piston-driven design with a reciprocating charging handle, aside from being chambered for the same 5.56X45 NATO cartridge. There is a little similarity between an AR-15 and a SCAR-L. No, the AR15 is a DI gun, however, the SCAR is loosely based on the AR18.

The FN SCAR is a gas-operated, short-stroke gas piston, self-loading rifle with a rotating bolt. It has a barrel change to switch between calibers and is constructed to be extremely modular.

Developed

The SCAR was developed by a Belgian manufactured named FN Herstal (FNH) specifically for the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to meet the requirements of the SCAR competition.

Two versions

The SCAR rifles consist of two main types:

SCAR-L

The L is for "light," which is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge.

With all of the police and crime shows on your favorite network or Netflix, you have heard the detectives mention "twenty-two" or nine millimeter, etc. Some of us know what that means right away. Others do not understand the meaning. Let us help clear up the confusion and educate you as to what a gun caliber means.

What does Caliber Mean?

For guns, “caliber” means the diameter of the barrel and thus the diameter of the bullet that is going through the gun barrel. For terminology purposes, "bullet" means the metal projectile, while the entire component is called a cartridge.

Caliber in firearms is the specified nominal internal diameter of the gun barrel bore regardless of how or where the bore is measured and whether or not the finished bore matches that specification. For example, a ".45caliber" firearm has a barrel diameter of roughly 0.45 inches (11 mm).

The numbers referencing the caliber have something to do with the size of the weapon. If you hear the number mentioned related to bullets, the number being referred to is what’s called the bullet’s "caliber." A unit of measurement related to a bullet’s size is the caliber. Specifically, what’s being described is the bullet’s diameter. The measurement of the diameter of the slug (or projectile) part of the bullet cartridge is the caliber of a bullet.

In some cases, the bullet casing will be wider than the slug itself, but the caliber is specifically describing only the width of the slug portion. It does not refer to the length or power of the bullet, but simply the diameter of the bullet. The width of a bullet determines its caliber.

American and Metric

Caliber refers to the diameter of a bullet and can be expressed in either metric (7mm) or English (.284) measurements, depending on where it was developed (Europe or the US). With all measurements, there is the American way and the Metric way of measuring.

	Metric

The metric is simple, a nine millimeter (9mm) is 9mm in diameter.

	American

The American measurement is a little different. A twenty-two (or 0.22) is twenty-two one hundredths (22/100’s) of an inch in diameter – or a little less than a quarter of an inch.

Caliber vs. Gauge

The gauge is a measurement of the inside diameter of a shotgun barrel, while caliber generally refers to the diameter of rifle and handgun bullets. However, a .410 is the caliber of a small shotgun which is never called a 67½-gauge. Gauges were developed hundreds of years ago before accurate devices allowed for precise measurement.

Numbers Aren’t Always Exact

With the .38 Special and the .357 Magnum, they are both considered 38-caliber guns, but the bullet is actually 357-thousandths of an inch in diameter.

As a responsible gun owner, there are certain things that you need to do for your weapons to ensure safety for you and those around you. Cleaning and maintaining are simple tasks to perform but they are extremely important . Anything that you own needs to be maintained to operate the way it was designed to operate.

Why clean your guns?

NRA’s gun safety rules states that:

Operate correctly and safely

Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely.

Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly.

Reliability

If you are using your gun for self-defense, it is extremely important that it works when you really need it. Therefore, cleaning the gun from the rust or crud in the barrel will be a lifesaver.

Remove moisture

If you are a hunter, you use your gun outdoors in a swamp, or in the rain so it is exposed to moisture. When the metal of the gun is exposed to moisture, it begins to oxidize and rust forms which can cause mishaps or the gun not working properly.

Extend gun’s life

Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life.

Simple cleaning and maintenance can make sure that your gun will last for generations, not just years.

Carbon buildup occurs in your weapon each and every time you fire it. When the propellant burns, it leaves carbon behind.

Clean every time

Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used.

A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting.

Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded.

The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process.

Be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area.

Learning about your gun

You may not know a lot about your weapon, but by cleaning, maintaining, oiling, lubricating, etc. it, you will learn all about your gun. Especially if you need to disassemble and put it back together, you will know your gun inside and out.

The easiest way to get familiar with your firearm is to clean it. The more you know about your gun, the better you will be able to repair it when something goes wrong.

At Thermold Magazines, we highly recommended following the rules for gun safety and cleaning.

The AR-18/180 utilizes a pair of action springs on the guide rods.

“The AR-180 weighs in slightly over 6 pounds and measures 38 inches long. The AR-180’s 18-inch barrel features a 1-in-12-inch twist rate, as found on the original M16. The 55-grain .223 bullets were the norm, with no thought given to the heavier .223 bullets common today. The AR-180 has a true 5.56mm chamber, enabling it to fire both 5.56mm and .223 Remington loads. The AR-180 takes a magazine very similar to the AR-15, though with the magazine catch slot located on the right side,” reports Tactical Life.

Thermold Magazines sells the AR-180 – 30 and AR-180 – 30/45 Magazines for AR-180 rifles.

Thermold Magazines produces weapons magazines and has become the product of choice among military personnel, law enforcement officers and sport shooters around the world with their products proudly made in the US.
